What the hell is going on here?
On November 3rd, the reporter from Luobao Media learned from Luoyang Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology that through cooperation and exchange with the Royal Ontario Museum of Canada,The museum sent 19 hollow brick rubbings of portraits to Luoyang, and 14 hollow bricks of Western Han Dynasty portraits unearthed in Luoyang and lost overseas realized "information return".

Qinglong, Tianma, samurai, phoenix bird, white tiger, Confucian scholar … Open these rubbings from Canada, and the vivid patterns can’t help but arouse people’s imagination.
"These rubbings are extended from the 14 hollow bricks of the Western Han Dynasty portraits collected by the museum, including the abdication and hunting activities that reflect the etiquette system of the Han Dynasty, the auspicious birds and beasts that reflect the thought of auspicious and immortal in the Han Dynasty, and the horse-training scene that reflects the wind of respecting horses in the Han Dynasty with the theme of horses."
Xu Yifei, a researcher at Luoyang Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, introduced,There are a large number of hollow brick cultural relics of Western Han Dynasty portraits in Luoyang. By contrast, some contents in these rubbings are really rare, such as the portraits of Confucian scholars, warriors, dragons and Qinglong.

Xu Yifei introduced,In the 1920s and 1930s,At the foot of Mangshan Mountain in Luoyang, a large number of hollow bricks with portraits of the Western Han Dynasty were unearthed in Jincun, pingle town, Mengjin County.
The unique shape with huge volume and hollow inside and the exquisite portraits on the bricks attracted the attention of antique dealers and foreign missionaries, so they collected and sold them. Many fine hollow bricks were collected by museums or private individuals in the United States, Canada and Japan.
These hollow bricks of portraits, which were "returned by information" in the form of rubbings, were unearthed in several Han tombs near Jincun.Around 1931, it was collected by William Charles White, a missionary from anglican church of canada who was then the Bishop of Henan, and entered the Royal Ontario Museum.

The Royal Ontario Museum is one of the museums with the largest number and the most complete variety of China cultural relics overseas, with a collection of 41,000 China cultural relics.Many cultural relics come from Luoyang,Among them, the most well-known is the cultural relics unearthed from Zhouda Tomb in Dongcun, Jincun, Luoyang, and there are also a large number of hollow bricks for portraits of the Western Han Dynasty.

The abdication of Confucian scholars
In recent years,Luoyang Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology cooperated with Royal Ontario Museum to carry out research work, focusing on the unearthed cultural relics in Luoyang collected by the museum, and the study of hollow bricks in Western Han Dynasty portraits is one of them.
At present, the two sides have made some achievements in the study of the spread history, portrait content and production of hollow bricks.
