The Huaihe River basin spans five provinces: Hubei, Henan, Anhui, Jiangsu and Shandong. Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, the Huaihe River Basin has adhered to "unified planning" and "unified governance" and solidly promoted the high-quality development of Huaihe River protection and governance. In the upper reaches of the Huaihe River, the irrigation and water supply project of diverting water from the Huaihe River to the old revolutionary base area of Dabie Mountain took three years to build, and the total amount of the project has been completed 70%. It is expected to be completed by the end of next year. This livelihood project and ecological project with an investment of more than 5 billion yuan will provide a reliable and stable water source for 1.25 million people in the upper reaches of Huaihe River. In Jiangsu, the lower reaches of the Huaihe River, the construction site of the second phase of the Huaihe River waterway into the sea is busy. The project started construction in July this year, and the designed flood discharge has expanded from the current 2,270 cubic meters per second to 7,000 cubic meters.

Over the past 70 years, China has invested more than 900 billion yuan in harnessing the Huaihe River, more than 6,300 reservoirs of various types have been built in the Huaihe River Basin, and 63,000 kilometers of dikes have been built and reinforced. The Huaihe River has achieved remarkable results in harnessing the Huaihe River, and its flood control and disaster prevention and mitigation capabilities have been continuously improved. In this decade, 36 of the 38 projects for further harnessing the Huaihe River have been started, and 14 of them have been completed. Nowadays, the Huaihe River, which suffered frequent floods and droughts in the past, nourishes one-ninth of the country’s population, one-tenth of its cultivated land and contributes one-sixth of its grain output.

Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, the management of the Huaihe River has paid more attention to the harmony between people and water. The Huaihe River has a clear shore and a beautiful river. By enhancing the water conservation capacity of the Huaihe River, the whole basin will establish a river length system and a lake length system, carry out forestry greening and efficiency improvement actions, build ecological corridors, reshape the shoreline ecology of water areas, and create beautiful rivers and lakes. Over the past ten years, more than 1,000 Happy Rivers and Lakes have been built, and the water quality in the Huaihe River Basin has remained above Class III all the year round. The picture of people and water in the Huaihe River Basin and the integration of urban water and water is slowly unfolding.
